Title

Main Street ca 1901

Description

Photograph shows an early view of Main Street. The photo was included in the Midcounty Chronicle, 21 Jan 1998, pg. 1 B with the following caption: "In the early days of the 20th century, top left, before Main Street became Boston Avenue, the Half Way House stood on the corner of Twin City Highway and Main Street, where the Nederland Pharmacy now stands. Above its barber-style pole, the lettering indicated that Port Arthur was 10 miles away. At the opposite end of the facade, it was stated that Beaumont was was 10 miles in the other direction." The Half Way House is on the right side of the photograph. At the end of the street you can see the house which is believed to have been built by Dirk Ballast and owned by Bradley Bell between 1905 and 1911.
Early Dutch settlers called this Heeren Street
