Pirogue Donated to the Museum

Description

Photograph appeared in the Port Arthur News, 15 July 1969, pg. 2 with the following caption: "FRENCH AND DUTCH ITEMS FOR MUSEUM -- Sponsors of the Nederland Windmill Museum hope to have all nationalities represented in the artifacts to be placed there. L. Theriot, left, a Frenchman who has lived in the city 46 years, donated the 121-year-old pirogue he and D. X. Rienstra are holding. Rienstra, a native son who is a descendent of one of the Hollanders who settled in the city, wears the traditional wooden shoes and Dutch cap which will be among items representing the netherlands. Both men have been active in making the museum a reality. Rienstra will operate a gift shop on the first floor of the windmill replica offering genuine Dutch imports. Theriot, a retired businessman, has landscaped the grounds. (Cricchio photo)."
On back: "French people from La. Joined the Dutch in the early 1920s. Loveless Theriot, left, donated this French pirogue more than 100 years old for the museum. At right is D. X. Rienstra whose parents were amont the city's first settlers. He was born here.
