Dutch Ambassador van Kleffens is Texan By Proxy

Photograph appeared in the Chronicle, 6 May 1948, page 1 with the following caption: "Texan by proxy … Dutch ambassador, E. N. von Kleffens, waving his hands like a Dutch cowboy. He is said to have remarked that he was a Dutchman first and a Texan second. The big Stetson hat was presented him by H. P. Youmans, president of the Nederland Chamber of Commerce. Lookiing on approvingly, at the right is Hendrick Bos, Netherlands consular at New Orleans." The presentation and photo were actually on May 1, 1948.

On the back of another copy of the photo is the following: "May 6, 1948. E. N. von Kleffens, Dutch Ambassador, is made a "proxy Texan" with the gift of a big Stetson hat from H. P. Youmans, president of the Nederland Chamber of Commerce. Looking on, at right, is Hendricks Bos, Netherlands Conlar at New Orleans. The occasion was the Golden Jubilee of Nederland."
