Title

Public School Nederland, Tex.

Description

Students and teachers outside the frame building that was the second school in Nederland. The photograph appeared in the Chronicle, 29 April 1948, pg. 9 with the following caption: "The second public school in Nederland, located opposite where the scout hut presently stands. The first school was an old shed behind the Orange Hotel. A wing was later added to this building to take care of the increase in the number of children. Many of the students seen in this picture have gone out into the world and made names for themselves. Among the early teachers in this building were Miss Lizzie Waterson and Miss Edith Cooke (Mrs. Spencer)." According to another item, the adults on the right are Miss Lizzie Waterson, instructor, and County Supt. of Schools Emil Moody.
On front: "Public School Nederland, Tex." On back: "Built by subscription 1902"
"In Our Town" article in the Midcounty Review, October 11, 1962, pg. 2, indicated Miss Waterson's first name was Lilly. Not sure which is correct.
