Story of the Marion & Ed Hughes Public Library

The Marion & Ed Hughes Public Library is an indelible part of the community; it's hard to imagine Nederland without it.  Yet few know how far back the story of the library goes or how very intertwined it has been with the story of the city.  The library is one of the few institutions that has been a part of the city from its founding, that expresses what Nederland is all about.

So come with us all the way back to 1898, when the first library was located in the Orange Hotel.  Follow us to the 1920s, when the library was a bookmobile stop and housed in the Morgan Taylor Shop.  Be there in 1932, when the first library building was constructed, and again in 1981, when the library received and addition and name change. Meet some of the people who have made the library special.
